THE  FLOREY UNIT APPEAL FUND

The Florey Unit SAFE appeal (Sexual Advice For Everyone) was launched successfully on June 12th 2000.

Reading Mayor Bob Green and MP's Martin Salter and David Rendel helped to launch a major fundraising drive for the Florey Unit that aims to raise £300,000 over the next two years.

This money will be used to refurbish and equip new premises that will be built to replace the temporary accommodation in which the department of Genito Urinary Medicine is currently housed.

The Florey Unit is housed in a portacabin whose life was only supposed to be five years. The unit has now been there for thirteen years and the building is in a desperate state of repair.

The new premises will be used for all aspects of Genito Urinary Medicine including dealing with the needs of HIV patients and with educating young people.

The unit will provide treatment and sexual health information in a safe and comfortable environment with the aim of preventing further spread of sexually transmitted infections.

The appeal got under way with a £5,500 cheque from the annual hospital show.
